Laparoscopic or "minimally invasive" surgery is a specialist surgical procedure. This approach was formerly employed for gynecologic surgery and gall bladder surgery. This approach has been used in colon surgery over the previous ten years. In traditional "open" surgery, the surgeon enters the belly with a single incision. Several 0.5-1cm incisions are used in laparoscopic surgery. Each incision is referred to as a "port." A trochar, a tubular tool, is placed into each port. During the process, specialized devices and a special camera known as a laparoscope are passed via the trochars. The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas at the start of the procedure to provide a working and viewing space for the surgeon. Images from the abdominal cavity are transmitted to high-resolution video displays in the operating room via the laparoscope. Throughout the procedure, the surgeon monitors precise images of the abdomen. This method enables the physician to perform typical surgery but with minimal incisions.
