Instead of a major incision, minimal access surgery is conducted with one or more tiny incisions. The surgeon inserts a video camera-equipped telescope through a small incision (typically only 1/4" long) into a bodily cavity. The surgery is then viewed on a TV monitor by the surgeon. Surgical instruments are then passed through further small incisions. The surgeon analyzes and operates on the affected area while watching magnified images on a television. Laparoscopy is a surgery that uses a telescope to operate on the abdomen. The procedure is known as thoracoscopy when used on the chest, and arthroscopy when used on a joint. Endoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic tool that is used to see inside organs, look for abnormalities, and take biopsies. A small camera and light source are attached to a flexible tube that can be placed into the mouth (for inspection of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum) or the anus (for inspection of the large bowel).
